Palestinian Elections: Renewal or More of the Same?
Join us for an expert conversation exploring the implications of President Mahmoud Abbas's recent decree calling for Palestinian legislative elections this fall. Watch live starting at 12:00 noon EDT (1600 GMT) on Thursday, July 23, 2026.
President Abbas’s recent decree calling for Palestinian parliamentary elections in November comes a few weeks after Fatah conducted its own party elections, and in the midst of Hamas internal elections and the formal dissolution of Gaza’s government. With polls showing the Palestinian public losing faith in both camps, what internal dynamics will shape their actions in the lead-up to voting day? How should the United States, Arab governments, and Israel react to these developments in light of the delayed transition process led by President Trump’s Board of Peace? Most important, do these various elections represent a genuine political renewal that will produce fresh leaders and policies, or are they merely intended to project a facade of reform while focusing on internal housekeeping?
To discuss these questions, The Washington Institute is pleased to announce a virtual Policy Forum with Neomi Neumann and Ibrahim Dalalsha, moderated by Gilbert Foundation Senior Fellow Ghaith al-Omari.
Neomi Neumann is an adjunct fellow with The Washington Institute, focusing on Palestinian affairs. Previously, she led the research unit at the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) and served with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Ibrahim Dalalsha is a leading analyst of Palestinian politics and founder of the Ramallah-based Horizon Center for Political Studies and Media Outreach. He served for two decades as the senior political advisor at the U.S. Consulate General in Jerusalem, advising American officials on the peace process, Palestinian politics, state development, civil society, and extremist movements. He has a wide network of close working relationships with key Palestinian officials, civil society leaders, and activists across the spectrum.
