Even as the deal offers short-term political benefits for both sides, it fails to resolve key issues separating them.

To prevent another failure that would further dishearten the Israeli and Palestinian publics, the Obama administration should focus on direct, low-profile engagement between the two sides, lapsed economic reform, and other helpful efforts.

Given the imposing obstacles to a near-term breakthrough, the time may be right for a fundamental rethink of U.S. strategy on the peace process.

There is no guarantee that a peace deal will be reached within the current timeline, but a Palestinian return to armed struggle would be a far greater political, economic, and humanitarian disaster than any short-term frustration with the negotiations.

The threat of European boycotts against Israel is much more potential than real, but it is gradually gaining ground as an unofficial movement and could surge if the current peace talks fail.
