Yemen and Gulf Affairs Expert April Longley Alley Joins Institute
Washington, DC –The Washington Institute for Near East Policy is pleased to announce that Dr. April Longley Alley is joining the organization as a senior fellow. She is a leading expert on Yemen and the Gulf with over 15 years of experience in conflict analysis and mediation.
Most recently, Dr. Alley served as the Senior Expert for the Gulf States and Yemen at the United States Institute of Peace. Before that, she spent four years at the United Nations as senior political advisor to the UN Special Envoy to Yemen.
Dr. Alley spent a decade at the International Crisis Group, a Brussels-based conflict prevention organization, ending her tenure there as Deputy Program Director for the Middle East and North Africa. She also worked at the National Defense University’s Center for Applied Strategic Learning.
“April brings unparalleled insight into one of the region’s most complex and consequential conflicts,” said Segal Executive Director Robert Satloff. “Her direct engagement in Yemen’s peace process, deep regional ties, and policy experience will significantly enhance our work on the Arabian Peninsula and Gulf States.”
Dr. Alley holds a PhD in Government and an MA in Arab Studies from Georgetown University. A former Fulbright and David L. Boren fellow, she has written extensively for publications including Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, The Middle East Journal, and the Journal of Democracy.
