WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Washington Institute for Near East Policy congratulates Nickolay Mladenov, the organization’s Segal Distinguished Visiting Fellow, on his appointment as high representative for Gaza and as a member of the Executive Board of the newly established Board of Peace.

“We are proud and pleased that Nickolay Mladenov has agreed to tackle this important challenge,” said Institute Executive Director Robert Satloff. “Few diplomats bring Nickolay’s combination of deep regional expertise, crisis-management experience, and commitment to peacemaking. I can think of no one better qualified to help navigate the hard road toward a brighter future in Gaza.”

Mladenov joined the Institute in 2021 after serving for more than five years as the U.N. special coordinator for the Middle East peace process. He served earlier as Bulgaria’s minister for foreign affairs and minister of defense, as well as a member of the European Parliament. He is the director-general of the Anwar Gargash Diplomatic Academy in the United Arab Emirates.

Upon returning to public service with his new role on the Board of Peace, Mladenov will step down from his position at the Institute.
