Tracking Anti-U.S. and Anti-Israel Strikes From Iraq and Syria During the Gaza Crisis
Militia Spotlight presents a regularly updated tracker with the best-known information about drone, rocket, and missile attacks against U.S. and allied targets, which have intensified since the Gaza war broke out.
The table below is primarily a tally of attack claims against U.S. and Israeli targets by the Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI) since it emerged on October 18, 2023, with a mix of claims by smaller emergent groups. (The "Islamic Resistance" is not a group itself, but a collective mechanism to claim attacks by existing U.S.-designated Foreign Terrorist Organizations such as Kataib Hezbollah, Asaib Ahl al-Haq, Harakat Hezbollah al-Nujaba, Kataib Sayyid al-Shuhada, and Ansar Allah al-Awfiya.)
The table went through multiple data scrubs to render the stats more accurate. Overall, IRI claims are still quite reliable indicators of real attacks. This suggests a high but imperfect level of coordination and communication between groups using the IRI brand.
Attacks fall into two categories:
- Attacks on U.S. and coalition bases in Iraq and Syria, which were the predominant category until the temporary cessation of anti-U.S. attacks in February-July 2024. We can have very high confidence these claimed anti-coalition attacks occurred in reality.
- Attacks on Israel claimed by Iraqi groups, which have been almost the only attacks reported since February 2024. We have moderate to high confidence that most or all of these attacks did occur (i.e., were launched) but there is very little evidence of effective strikes in Israel itself, suggesting a very low arrival rate due to interceptions over Syria, Iraq and Jordan.

Jan 30 | Poss attack on Harir or Erbil, Iraq | Unknown | Apparent Sammad KAS-04 crash on border of Iraqi Kurdistan |
On the afternoon of January 30, a Sammad-type drone came down outside the village of Bibani, near Altun Kupri. There are some reports the drone was conducting a surveillance flight and was downed by ground fire from Peshmerga positions, but wreckage recovered at the crash site (including an explosive warhead) points to a one-way attack drone. The location of the crash suggests the drone was aimed at Erbil or Hair and launched out of the Mamah / Dibis area (where the US struck a Nujaba drone cell in December). |

Jan 29 | Kharab al-Jir/Rmelan Air Base, Syria | Unclear, likely Hezbollah Harakat al-Nujaba | 10x 122mm Grad rockets in a truck launcher |
At approximately 21:30hrs on January 29 (probably a few hours after Qaani’s meeting with top militia leaders in Baghdad), Iraqi security forces found a bongo truck-type launch vehicle near Rabia in western Nineveh. The truck was loaded with ten rockets (probably 122mm) and was aimed across the border in the direction of the Rmelan Landing Zone (RLZ). The operators of the truck ran off when the ISF apparently “spotted” the vehicle.
