Rand Beers was the deputy assistant to the president for Homeland Security during the Obama administration. He served previously as acting secretary of Homeland Security following the resignation of Secretary Janet Napolitano in September 2013, until Jeh Johnson assumed that office on December 23, 2013. As under secretary, Beers direct the Department's integrated efforts to reduce risks to physical, cyber and communications infrastructures. NPPD collaborates with all levels of government, the private sector, nongovernmental organizations, and international bodies to prevent, respond to, and mitigate threats to U.S. national security from acts of terrorism, natural disasters, and other catastrophic events. He is, in addition, a visiting professor at Dartmouth College.
