Washington, D.C. – Dr. Lori Plotkin Boghardt, an expert on Gulf politics, has been named the inaugural Barbara Kay Family Fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, the research organization announced today.

Made possible by the generosity of Institute Trustee and Board of Directors member Barbara Kay and her family, this multi-year pledge will enable Dr. Boghardt to continue her work on Gulf security and counterterrorism issues.

"We are delighted that Barbara’s family foundation has chosen to honor the work of one of the Institute’s most impressive scholars," said Dr. Robert Satloff, Institute Executive Director and the Howard P. Berkowitz Chair in U.S. Middle East Policy. "Through this gift, they ensure that Dr. Boghardt will continue to provide the well-respected analysis that has made her a trusted resource for governments, academia, and the media."

“I am honored to be named the Barbara Kay Family Fellow,” Plotkin Boghardt says. “This generous support will strengthen the Institute’s ability to advise policymakers on how the U.S. can further build on its vital security relationships in the Gulf."

Dr. Boghardt has extensive government, academic, and private-sector experience, including serving for more than a decade as a Middle East analyst for the U.S. intelligence community. She has also served as an analyst at the Brookings Institution, the RAND Corporation, and as a Soref research fellow at The Washington Institute. The author of Kuwait Amid War, Peace and Revolution: 1979-1991 and New Challenges (Palgrave Macmillan, 2007), she received her doctorate from St. Antony's College, the University of Oxford.

"With so much change and turbulence in the Middle East, including in the Gulf, I am proud to support a scholar-practioner of Lori’s caliber,” said Barbara Kay. “We are delighted to have our family attached to the fellowship of such an insightful policy expert.”

Kay, who currently resides in Palm Beach, FL, is deeply involved in community activities and serves on the boards of numerous nonprofit and charitable organizations. She is the former president of Barbara Gordon Associates, an advertising, marketing and public relations firm, experience that she has brought to her nonprofit leadership endeavors. A past president of the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County, Barbara hosts the organization's local television program, Mosaic, and has interviewed numerous leaders, authors, and scholars for the show. She is also involved with the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, Jewish People Policy Institute, and Technion-Israel Institute of Technology.
