(WASHINGTON) -- Daniel M. Heckelman, a proven leader, strategist, and fundraising professional, has been named The Washington Institute's new director of development, the research organization announced today.

"With the addition of Dan Heckelman, we are confident the Institute will move from strength to strength," said President Martin J. Gross and Development Chair Shelly Kassen. "He is the right person to devise and implement a winning strategy so we can secure the resources needed to fulfill our mission."

A graduate of Brown University, Heckelman has served most recently as deputy executive vice president of B'nai B'rith International, where he was responsible for supervising the entire range of the organization's development efforts, including major gifts, annual fund, foundations, membership, endowment support, planned giving, and corporate development. Earlier in his career he coordinated the organization's national membership campaign and Israel programs.

"We are thrilled that a person of Dan's stature, experience, and expertise is joining us to lead our superb development team," said Washington Institute Executive Director Dr. Robert Satloff. "I am looking forward to working with Dan to deepen and broaden support for the Institute among Americans committed to improving the quality of U.S. policy in the Middle East."

At the Institute, Heckelman is responsible for all aspects of the organization's development efforts, from charting the annual fundraising campaign, to supervising and coordinating the work of the Institute's three regional directors -- in New York, Florida, and California -- to spearheading the Institute's development initiatives in the Washington-Baltimore area. In addition, he will play a key role in conceiving and executing a new testamentary gift effort, essential for the Institute's long-term health and growth.

Heckelman lives with his wife, Sally, an educator and musician, and their children in Silver Spring, Maryland.
