Condoleezza Rice, Mortimer B. Zuckerman to be Honored at Annual Scholar-Statesman Dinner

(Washington, D.C. -- August 1, 2013) The Washington Institute for Near East Policy will present its 2013 Scholar-Statesman Award to former secretary of state Dr. Condoleezza Rice at a gala dinner Tuesday, October 1, 2013, at The Plaza in Manhattan at 8:00 p.m. The Institute also will honor publisher and philanthropist Mortimer B. Zuckerman.

The Scholar-Statesman Award celebrates outstanding leaders who, through their public service and professional achievements, exemplify the idea that sound scholarship and a discerning knowledge of history are essential to wise and effective policy and the advancement of peace and security in the Middle East. During the event, Dr. Rice will comment on current events in the Middle East in a conversation with Washington Institute Executive Director Robert Satloff.

Dr. Condoleezza Rice served as national security advisor and secretary of state during President George W. Bush's administration, pioneering the policy of transformational diplomacy which championed democratic reform throughout the Middle East. She is currently a professor at Stanford University, serving as both the Denning professor in global business and the economy at the Graduate School of Business and the Thomas and Barbara Stephenson senior fellow on public policy at the Hoover Institution.

Mortimer B. Zuckerman is a renowned philanthropist and a member of The Washington Institute's board of advisors. Mr. Zuckerman is cofounder, chairman, and former CEO of Boston Properties as well as the publisher of the New York Daily News and of U.S. News & World Report.

Previous Scholar-Statesman honorees include British Prime Minister Tony Blair; President Bill Clinton; Secretary of State Henry Kissinger; and Secretary of State George P. Shultz.
