Jacob Walles retired from the U.S. foreign service in March 2017 after a distinguished thirty-five-year career, including time as ambassador to Tunisia and senior advisor on foreign fighters in the State Department’s Counterterrorism Bureau. After leaving government, he joined the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace as a nonresident senior fellow.
