Derek Chollet is the counselor and senior advisor for security and defense policy at the German Marshall Fund of the United States and author of the forthcoming book The Long Game: How Obama Defied Washington and Redefined America's Role in the World (Public Affairs, June 2016). Previously, he served as assistant secretary for international security affairs at the Pentagon, senior director for strategic planning on the National Security Council staff, and principal deputy director of the State Department's Policy Planning Staff.
